About

Fix the Fells exists to protect the beautiful mountains of the Lake District from erosion and environmental damage by repairing and maintaining upland paths.

It is a collaborative partnership programme between the National Trust, the Lake District National Park, Nurture Lakeland, Friends of the Lake District, Natural England and Cumbria County Council.

Vital to the success of Fix the Fells’ work are a team of more than 100 dedicated volunteers, known as “lengthsmen”. These local volunteers work tirelessly in support of the environment, maintaining and repairing 200 upland paths annually by pitching paths, clearing drains and re-landscaping erosion. Last year alone they contributed 2,030 days of volunteering and completed 493 “drain runs” (clearing blocked drains along an entire path) and 85 work parties. Their efforts have been recognised recently by being named runners-up in the Beatrix Potter Awards in the “Looking after the Landscape” category.

The Greggs Foundation is supporting our project with funding for our volunteer programme. This work will benefit the environment in the following ways:

  • protect and enhance the spectacular Lake District fells
  • remove eyesores that can be seen for miles
  • improve water quality in lakes and rivers for plant and fish life
  • protect upland habitats for rare plant species
  • preserve important carbon sinks
