It's the last week in January and the weather is suitably
grim great for plants. But don't dismay fellow dirters, there's loads on this week to get you out and about in south London (and beyond!).
Happy Monday everyone!
Monday
Annual General Meeting of Hyde Farm Climate Action Network
Please note, the venue has changed because of the level of interest. It is now in
The Weir Link on 33 Weir Road, London SW12 0NU, open 7.30 pm for 8pm
Wednesday
Herne Hill Green Drinks Come talk about all things environmental with nice people in a great pub! The Herne HIll green drinks are held in the wonderful Prince Regent on Dulwich Road. Jolliness starts around 7pm.
Thursday
Embrace Woodlands!- a great series of events from Embrace. Everyone is welcome at this conservation project in Dulwich wood and it runs from 10.30am to 3.30pm.
Nature's Gym- another chance to get out and about in wilds of south London, this time in Forest Hill. You should get in touch with the event organiser
Jess Rushton to find out more.
A very special event down in Tooting this Thursday evening:
Energy Specialist Jeremy Leggett will be speaking on the subject of how Peak Oil will affect Londoners and what we can do to make the transition.
If any of you south Londoners fancy venturing north of the river,
Hackney are holding their green drinks this Thursday at the delightful Pembury Tavern. New people are always very welcome!
Friday
The Meat License Proposal- a controversial topic for debate this Friday in Deptford with artist John O'Shea introducing the concept that people who eat meat must ‘be equally comfortable with killing animals'. Lots more details on the page.
Saturday
A two day course in
pruning old fruit trees. This one's down in Brighton folks, but just in case you wanted an excuse to take a trip to the seaside, don't say I'm not there for you!
If you're staying in London this weekend, then you've another chance to attend the excellent 'draught busting Saturday' event, this time with
Telford Park CAN. There's free energy advice and demonstrations at 11.30 and 1.00 and you can buy draught-proofing materials and radiator panels on the day.
Sunday
A chance to wrap up the week with a healthy bit of (nearly?) spring cleaning. Volunteers are needed to join Thames21and
help clean-up the waterside areas around the historic House Mill at Three Mills, Bromley by Bow. All equipment, as well as a feeling of general well being, will be provided.
And last but by no means least, this weekend is the
Big Garden Birdwatch! Turn climate scientist for an hour and help the RSPB track changes in bird numbers. Birds react quickly to changes in the environment so are great indicators of the health of our surroundings. Participation packs can be dowloaded free of charge from the RSPB website.
If you are hosting or know of any other upcoming green events in London please do add them to the site. Or, if that's a bit daunting, have a look at the starting out page or send me an SOS message.
(Thanks to
John-Morgan for the astonishingly beautiful photograph.)
