Making environmental change happen

Blog Action Day

Well.. a real sign of the times. This is going to be huge. Blog Action Day (#bad09) is an annual event (although this is so much bigger this year) when bloggers across the world come together and blog about a single issue. And with Copenhagen just around the corner, what better subject than Climate Change.

What can I write that hasn't been written before? Probably nothing. But I'd like to point the members of our growing Project Dirt community in the direction of a few great movements which are inspiring.

1. If you haven't joined up 10:10, you must. Everyone - yes, even you and me, pledging to cut their carbon emissions by 10% in 2010. Difficult? Maybe. Possible? Definitely.

2. The TckTckTck campaign is an alliance of some of the real 'big guns' in the environmental world. People you'd sit up and notice. And through funky actions like their cool celeb song and video, they're massively raising the profile of what they stand for - the need for action on Climate Change! They even managed to rope Kofi Annan into a semi-rap. Wow.
(and check out their "Climate Orb" - an animated interactive tool housing first-hand stories searchable by country, keyword and timeframe).

3. Next week, on October 24, 350.org is organizing the International Day of Climate Action. What are all these numbers about? Put simply we need to limit the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere to a piddly (but tricky) 350 parts per million. You can visit their site and see what people all around the world are planning to do next week to demonstrate their commitment to stopping climate change.

4. And here on Project Dirt, there's a group set up to try to help people navigate these range of organisations, and providing support to help them coordinate their actions. A big remit, but someone's got to do it! The group is Brighter Future - check them out!

That's about all I have time for, it's getting late. But do spread the word - and we hope to see you on the 24th at a 350 event (e.g. the Big Blow... oo-err missus) or nef's The Bigger Picture event - both on the Southbank.
