GETTING RID OF GREEN FLY

Hi Mark. Just to follow on from Carey's great advice, I thought you might like to know that you can buy a ready-made soft soap solution from most garden centres. Its OK to use for organic crops and a…

I am a Trustee for the Environment Trust of Richmond upon Thames, a role that I took on mainly due to my interest in the River Centre. I have always been a keen naturalist and spent many happy childhood hours in the ancient woodland surrounding my Essex home and mucking about in the mud in the Thames Estuary. As an adult, I started my career in the city as an insurance broker but at the age of 30 was able to make a break for freedom and studied Earth Science at Kingston University. During this time I worked as Assistant Recycling Officer for Kingston Council during the summer breaks. I graduated with a First Class BSc (hons) in 1995. Since that time I have worked for myself as a garden designer and gardener. I have developed a garden at my son's primary school (St Mary's and St Peter's in Teddington) and assisted with their award winning Wildlife garden.

I am married with one son, a dog and two cats. We have a small boat moored on the Upper Thames and my son is a Sea Scout. The Thames is a very important resource for me and my family.

Hamlands - SCC'S scandalous disregard for nature reserve.

I suppose that SCC thought that the area opposite the lagoon at TYM was hidden and largely "out of site, out of mind" despite being in the middle of one of the most historic areas in the UK - not to say in the world (Kim Wilkie TLS report recommends it as a World Heritage Site). With callous disregard for the unique wildlife and heritage of the area, SCC's arboriculturalist sent in the bulldozers one fine day in september, and razed the woods to the ground. No sensitive management methods here -… Continue

Trying to drum up support for the Environment Trust - from its own members!

Spent a few hours today calling up members in order to get them to either come along to the Trust's AGM or send in their proxy vote forms in order to fight back against the opposition who are trying to get voted in as trustees. What a divide there is - betweeen the "younger" members (generally anyone less than 60 years old) and the more senior members. The younger ones are happy to help - the older ones far less so - in fact one or two of them said that they wanted to leave the trust due to the… Continue

Extraordinary means to keep the garden "Wildlife friendly"

Last night I went wandering down the garden to smell the roses and feel generally smug about how fab it looks...when I was diverted by Blackbirds going ape (so to speak) in the holly . Now Blackbirds can be pretty dim and often get spooked at the mere sight of a cat - almost advertising the fact that they have a nest nearby - but this time they had a whole group of mates to join in the din - Long-tailed Tits, Great Tits, Blue Tits, Robins - all making a kerfuffle. I peered up into said holly tre… Continue
