Food waste

Its a real shame that Wandsworth doesn't seem to collect food waste from schools yet, as Islington does, for composting. It mixes it with the plant green waste from parks and gardens, and it goes bac…

Profile Information

About Me:
what to say!!! briefly, am passionate about treading lightly on the earth! Have been a grower of things for many years, involved in wildlife and human friendly regeneration of urban 'industrially wasted' sites, wildlife and human friendly nature sites, have a few gardens under my 'guardianship' too, including volunteer gardening for our senior citizens, because I find it so personally rewarding, and growing things so theraputic. I'm hoping to do some voluntary work in an animal refuge soon too. For paid work I am a recycling officer for a London borough, which I also like very much because it takes me out and about and gives me face to face contact with lots of people. Oh...and I'm vegan! Trying to be a better one though! In the 80s I was a good Shop Steward and won a scholarship to Ruskin College where I spent 2 heavenly years luxuriating in the life of a full time student after having been working since the age of 15. The went to uni because there was nothing else to do...it was the recession. I'm attracted to the possibilities of Project Dirt- though wouldn't describe myself as trendy...
Key Interests
Conservation, Recycling, Composting, Wildlife, Gardening
Experience/Skills
varied! In growing things: A bit of everything over 20 years worth! Soon to begin growing a Mulberry tree in a large container, and garden sized apple trees, maybe pear also, and berried shrubs like goosberries. Have grown redcurrant bushes successfully. Know quite a bit about wildlife friendly organic gardening. Container growing and bed growing. Some basic joinery knowledge/practice. Used to be actively involved in politics in the 80s so know a bit about lobbying (still have the passion, but have trouble with the will and prefer to leave it to those with more interest and patience!)

Fuel poverty?

I would very much like to get involved with people specifically working on fuel poverty - if anyone can advise me I'd be grateful! Many thanks, Carey

Hi Carey - full details of river clean-up weren't on the Event, hope you've got them now from the main blog on our site, or the Wandle Trust's page: http://www.wandletrust.org/?page_id=2

Cool - thanks for the message Carey, and see you on Sunday!
And ... on the clutz issue below, check out Jess' blog (and details of who to contact) here.
(by the way, if you lose something on Project Dirt, you can use the Search box in top right of every page... e.g. try typing "Chelsea flower show")
Cheers, Nick

Carey - good to hear from you again.
You asked why I chose invicta. This was the only variety available as a standard (well half standard in this case). So it was dead easy to choose. If I give you a cutting though, it won't be a tree, it will be a bush as the bush is effectively grafted onto the stem of a tree. Clever stuff.

Thanks for the website reference - I hadn't heard of agroforestry before. I wonder whether it would be a good idea to have a place on this site where there are good website references? Anyway, I am going to see how my cutting fares and if it doesn't work out, I will come and beg for one of yours.

The blueberry bush by the way is now ravishing - a very deep red. The cherry tree leaves were beautiful - much more fragile and subtle in their colouring - as they died.

Good luck with the mulberry - I am looking for another tree to grow in a pot along with the cherry but don't want to rush into it so I shall wait for news.

Hello Carey and thanks for your message - glad you like my page :)
I have a fair amount of green green envy of your growing spaces as we currently only have room for a few pots in the kitchen but it's all good practice (which we desperately need!) for when we have a garden next year (hopefully).
Are your volunteer gardening sites in SW London?
Rache :)

Hello Carey again. I was in hope of a simple solution to the caterpillar problem - my grandfather used to pay my mother as a girl for collecting caterpillars in their hundreds. I had not come across the ingenious solution of finding them something better to eat and will give that some thought. Location seems to be important. Re redcurrants - if my cutting doesn't work, which I should know some time next year, may I have one of yours? I would hope to be able to swap something with you. I plumped for a standard gooseberry - I have a young son so I haven't been keen on the idea of a prickly bush from which I have to fish out footballs. So I went for a prickly tree instead. I have an Invicta gooseberry and had I not picked off all the fruit to allow the tree to establish itself it would have been a bumper crop. It then suffered attacks from sawfly and aphids - you have to be watchful and I was on holiday both times the sawfly attacked. Interestingly it seems quite happy on a north facing wall. When I phoned the RHS, they were adamant that it was better to put it in the ground that to grow it in a pot. I also grew blueberries as well and the plant is very pretty especially as the leaves go a lovely red in the autumn.

This is the site where I bought all the fruit trees and bushes

Hello Carey - we haven't been introduced but it was nice to be contacted by someone who is interested in minimising food waste and landfill. The Green Johanna could be for you but it is not a cheap composter. I am attaching the link to the product website where it sells for £98.99 plus postage.

http://www.greencone.com/home.asp?lang=1

The owners of the site also have strong views on reducing the food going into landfill and post quite a few papers/articles on the subject. You might find them interesting.

It looks like you might be the right person to give me some advice on veg and fruit growing. My current problem is how to keep the caterpillars and baby snails off my kale and next spring the sawfly and aphids off my gooseberry bush without resorting to non-organic measures. Any suggestions? I would also like to know how you get on with the fruit trees. So far, I have a cherry in a large pot which produced a small amount last year and seems to be doing OK. As an experiment I am growing also trying to grow redcurrent in cordons.

Are you going to the green drinks on 6 November in Balham? If so, I will see you there as I have managed to get a babysitter.
