Making environmental change happen

The idea for a fruit and nut map of the area was suggested at the Transition Town Brixton Great Unleashing on 2nd October 2008. We all know this is a great idea - so lets do something about it straight away. Pass this link on to everyone you know and spread the word so that this map reaches the people who want it.

You can view and edit the South London Fruit & Nut Map map here

Every body should be able to collaborate on and add to this map using the Edit button which opens a toolbar on the map which allows you to pins where trees are.

If everybody adds the burgeoning trees they have spotted on their regular routes this autumn then soon we will have a wonderful map of existing produce ready for us to use next year.

All those fruit pickers out there - let us know where the hot spots are and make sure you make a note if permission needs to be asked to pick fruit.

Share your knowledge. Be responsible in your foraging. And be generous with the jams and preserves you make with produce from public land!

Hi Bonnie.

Good to meet you on Sunday. This map actually links to something we have been working with Wandsworth Council on - a Green Map for the borough. I imagine over time we might be able to link the two. Some of us at WEF are meeting with the council tomorrow to discuss the Green Map so I might try to mention this possibility with them then. I'll let you know if anything comes out of it anyway.

Diane Rippon, who has been involved with the development of the Green Map than I have might have some further thoughts on this idea.

Thanks

Denny

Hey Denny,

Thanks for the input. I have started another Google Map which shows existing and possible growing areas in and around Brixton too. But I am not throwing that link around so much, because it is not as immediately useful as a map of fruit and nut trees. If you'd like to have a look at it it's here.

A further map exists of green organisations and businesses etc in Brixton, which was made by Guy Shrubsole. There's a link to it on the TransitionTownBrixton Food Group Wiki, but it's currently uneditable, so can't be added to.

This is a fantastic idea. I want to add a very productive eating apple tree in the street near my house but I can't see the 'Edit' button. I guess you have register as a User of Google Maps? I tried to log in with my Google Groups sign on details but it hung. Diane
