The Friends of Windmill Allotments

The allotments between the Windmill and the Waterworks are managed from the Reading office of Thames Water. There have been intermittent threats to use the land for development or as part of a new school site. Over the past few years the Friends of Windmill Allotments have struggled to defend the allotments, and to promote the idea of returning overgrown corners, and derelict plots to regular use.
One of their recent projects has been to use one of the plots on a community basis for residents of a local care home, with children from local schools and adult volunteers befriending and acting as mentors to garden with the elderly and disabled. Funding has been found, and the different generations have been learning from each other, the project has raised the morale of the elderly participants.
However, TW has been reluctant to endorse the project and some other plot holders are concerned about more people using the site – though this trend is inevitable as demand grows, the Friends- FoWAA - urge local residents and groups to write to Thames Water
