Sustainable Streatham have succeeded, after much persistence, in getting their local ODEON to screen Food Inc, an incredibly important documentary that "lifts the veil on the food industry". The film will be shown in a 200-seater theatre and it would be really amazing if we could fill every seat! Please put this date in your diaries and tell all your friends:
23rd February at 8pm, Streatham ODEON. Tickets are only £5!

You can already book tickets on the Odeon's website.

A bit more about the film...
"More and more frequently, it seems, profit has been given priority over human health. Food, Inc. lifts the veil on the food industry, exposing a highly mechanised underbelly all too often hidden from the consumer."

If you can't make it on the night, or want to know what else you can do to help support this film, have a read of this advice from the UK film distributors DogWoof:

"The first week in cinemas is important for any film to make an impact and it’s often hard to convince cinemas to book documentaries over Hollywood fare. The cinema chains look at the number of tickets sold in the first week and then decide either to book the film for the following weeks in more cinemas, or to dump it in the bin!!

Other important films such as An Inconvenient Truth and The Age of Stupid started very small, but went on to have huge releases on the back of a strong start in cinemas and influence millions of people through their messages of hope and change. If we can pack out the first weekend and the nationwide screenings on 15th February, the film will gather a momentum allowing the greatest number of people possible the opportunity to see it."

Dear SuS

Don't forget this week on Wednesday, 10th the meeting about the Ice Rink and on Thursday, 11th Streatham Green Drinks

Ice Rink & Leisure Centre - LB Lambeth & Tesco Update

Wednesday, 10 February @ 7.00pm

Streatham Action invite the residents of Streatham, those who work here and those who otherwise have connections to the area to a public meeting on the current status of the Streatham Hub development including the promised report by Tesco and the council on the revised proposal by Tesco presented to the council almost three months ago.

The Streatham Action chair is contacting Tesco to send suitably senior and informed personnel to present Tesco's side and the council has been asked to send the new head of Regeneration plus team to present the council’s side of things.

The meeting will take place at Hideaway and will benefit from an open bar in addition to comfortable premises. Entry is via Empire Mews from Stanthorpe Road behind the sports shop at the corner of the High Road and Stanthorpe Road.

Dear SuS

We have one final thing to do to get Sustainable Streatham (SuS) well and truly on it's feet and up & running and that is to:

1.

Agree the Constitution – our legal governing document
2.

Appoint a Chair, Treasurer and Secretary in accordance with that Constitution through a process of nomination and, if necessary, an election.

Once we have done this we will be legally constituted as a Community Group and therefore be eligible for funding as such.

To enable us to do this you will find attached:

*

Sustainable Streatham Constitution – unless I hear otherwise it will be assumed that the constitution is agreed by the membership as it stands. This document has been to consultation within SuS.
*

Sustainable Streatham Management Committee (MC), Officer Nomination Form
*

Information sheets on the posts of Chair, Treasurer & Secretary from Lambeth Voluntary Action Council (LVAC)

LVAC have said that they can provide training for all these posts, support to the MC and access to the Community Accountant for the Treasurer.

It is anticipated that the MC will meet approximately bi-monthly, or if needed in response to SuS activity, and will hold it's AGM annually. The first AGM must be held within 18 months from the date of this communication.
Elections

Should multiple nominations be received for any or all posts, those posts will then be appointed via an election. The legal requirements for this election are described in the Constitution. SuS will hold this election (if necessary) via an online anonymous voting site. Full records will be kept of all procedures.

If there are no multiple nominations and only single names put forward for each post the appointments will be carried.

Announcement of the appointments or the impending elections will be made within 2 weeks of the receipt of all nominations. Nominations should be received, via email, within 2 weeks of the date of this communication.

You are eligible to stand, nominate and vote if you are on the Sustainable Streatham Mailing List, a member of the Project Dirt Sustainable Streatham Project and you live or work in Streatham.
Next Steps

Could I ask you all please to:

*

Read the constitution
*

Consider whether you are willing and able to stand as either Chair, Secretary or Treasurer and ask someone else to nominate you or
*

Nominate someone else – please ask them before you do so.

Dear SuS

The questions that SuS gets asked the most are about local Food, and about energy reduction in our homes and in our Town. Food we are doing already and now we want to begin answering the Energy question, and this the the event to do just that. if you have any questions, as always feel free to ask.

I look forward to hearing from you all.

Sustainable Streatham Launches Energy Group

In its growing and continuing quest to work with local residents to help Streatham become a greener community, Sustainable Streatham (SuS) has organised a new group dedicated to domestic and commercial energy reduction. The launch of SuS's Energy Group will take place on Saturday, 13th and Sunday, 14th March between 1pm and 4pm at St Leonard’s Church, Tooting Bec Gardens, Streatham, London SW16 1RB. Private companies, Not For Profit organisations, community groups and key speakers will attend the event.

The impetus for this event was the need for community members to be able to get information about energy reduction and how to do it, and to find out about organisations that would support local citizens to move to reducing energy consumption and to expanding renewable energy. The exciting news that the government has decided to launch a Feed In Tariff or (FIT) which would pay households for any renewable energy they produced has created urgency and so this event is being organised.

The exciting thing about the Feed In Tariff is that households will be paid for ALL energy produced - not just the excess that they feed into the grid. This makes the investment in renewable energy much more affordable to millions and could be a major factor in enabling the UK to reduce it’s CO2 emissions. A similar Feed In Tariff has already made a major impact in Germany where 70% of renewable energy produced is attributed to the Feed In Tariff.

The focus of the SuS Energy Event is to:

1. Educate local residents on the steps to take to reduce energy consumption, which will result in savings to them and less CO2 to the planet.
2. Educate residents about how the Feed In Tariff, which will launch in April 2010, will generate money for them and thus enable green energy like solar panels to be affordable.
3. Provide information about a range of renewable energy options, technologies, grants, loans and payment schemes available that are making renewable energy accessible to us all.

SuS is a community organisation which began when a small but passionate group decided to act locally on climate change. SuS is an umbrella group which alongside this Energy Group currently boasts a Food Group and a Film & Campaigning Group, as well as individuals leading drives to map green spaces in Streatham, run clothing swaps and making groups, and is engaging with the community and local government to promote sustainable living in Streatham. SuS is also hopes to launch a Re-use, Re-duce, Re-cycle Group, an Outreach & Education Group and a Transportation Group. If any residents are interested in taking action and volunteering they can contact SuS at the event, through SuS's webpage at: http://sustainablestreatham.wordpress.com, on the SuS page on Project Dirt at: http://www.projectdirt.com/group/sustainablestreatham or by email to: info@sustainablestreatham.org.uk
