Making environmental change happen

Hello everyone,

I’m a keen apple collector and this year made an apple press with the resulting cider and juice! Now that I have moved to Tulshill I have been thinking about the idea of making another one that was in a public space and available for anyone to come and use and juice their apples primarily as a way of helping people to use the produce which they would normally either not know what to do with due to quantity or wouldn’t want to eat due to damage. A press (particularly if it is placed around a growing space) can be a great focus for events in the apple season and communal juicing sessions can be fun and produce delicious juice which can really impress the more apple “indifferent” members of the community!

This is just a general post to see if anyone thinks it would be a good idea and we can take it from there.

Jack - that's amazing! Just what I've been after....I'm going to be planting community orchards in secondary schools across London and it would be a fine thing if from time to time we could borrow the press! I'd love to know how you made it. I'm new to the real world of apples and orchards, so if you ever fancy getting together over a local cider to chat varieties I'm there. Lewis 07532 018767

Hi Lewis,

Thanks for the email and glad you liked the idea! The press we made uses a hydraulic car jack and four strong recycled oak beams to hold the press and cheese. Sounds good about the community orchards - are you working with a charity to do that or are you a teacher? Perhaps you would be interested in collaborating to build another press? Either way I would definitely be up for meeting up for a chat and a cider. Are you in South London? I live in Tulse Hill but have got a bike! Jack

Hey. Yeah I'm in SE9, between Mottingham and Eltham. I'm working with a charity called Learning through Landscapes and 'Fruit-full Schools', our orchard project, is being run with partners Common Ground and Garden Organic. Know any pubs that do a decent cider in the area? Would love to collaborate - only I'm pretty useless with practical building stuff skills! However, I plan to get working on this, so if I can help you make it in anyway and you can share your skills that'd be wicked!
