I think this group has been superceded by the London Low Carbon Communities Network...

Calling all Wandsworth Residents!

Transition Town Wandsworth would like to invite you to an open meeting on 23rd November at 7pm, at the Battersea Arts Centre, Lavender Hill.

We'll be discussing...
- Our aspirations for a sustainable Wandsworth
- How we can make it happen?
- Who can do what?

We hope to agree working groups on different topics e.g. Energy, Food Growing and Transport, and taking forward plans for our community garden.

There will be many opportunities for all to get involved in everything, so come along with your ideas and enthusiasm!

More info here: http://www.projectdirt.com/events/transition-town-wandsworth-5

There's now a Transition Lewisham e-mail group, to allow the people in various parts of the borough who are mulling over doing smthg to share ideas etc. To join the group send an e-mail to transitionlewisham-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. There are people from New Cross, Brockley, Ladywell, Lee Green and Sydenham on it, but not quite enough in any one area to get going yet.

Hi Sue

I've been speaking with Wandsworth and they are almost certain to 'opt-in' to the Act too. I'm now trying to discuss how they will involve Wandsworth Environment Forum members. I will let people know more once I know myself.

In my day job at the SDC, I have had some involvement with the Act which has left me slightly sceptical about how much energy it will be worth us all putting into engaging with it but, that said, it's still worth having a go!

Best wishes

Denny

Lewisham has already opted in to the Sustainable Communities Act - I proposed a motion to full council about 6 weeks ago that was passed unanimously. Text of motion can be found on p339 of agenda: http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/776A6233-F200-4CE4-853E-5AD587DBFE3F/0/2dc6a48e831445c6a0c1c8f0c612662dAgenda229September2008.PDF. We also organised a public meeting with Steve Shaw from the Local Works campaign, which went well. Important to get Councils to opt in. Potentially powerful piece of grassroots up legislation, rather than top down.

At the networking day we talked briefly about the Sustainable Communities Act, but no-one seemed to know much about it. We thought it might be something we could cooperate on.

The Localworks website (http://www.localworks.org/) has some useful resources.

Does anyone have time to look at this and suggest a course of action for our networks? It seems that in the first place we need to persuade our councils to opt in to the Act.
