Making environmental change happen

I have spoken to a number of people recently that are keen to become greener - but are holding back because there is a specific "vice" that is holding them back. For example, they would like to get a sports car, need to fly often, like eating steak etc.

They are therefore holding back from pledging to improve other aspects of their lifestyle (relating to green issues) because they feel it would be hypocritical.

At the moment the pledge only concentrates on what people will do to become greener. Would it also be productive to let each person have ONE "vice" that they are allowed to do - that might not necessarily be pro-green ... but would encourage them to step forward in other areas?

A slightly controversial idea - but it would be good to get everyones thoughts on whether this would be constructive/beneficial - or whether it would cloud the pledge scheme...!?

cheers.

An interesting suggestion. I have a feeling that you're probably right about everyone having a 'vice' - I certainly know I do! It may also be true that people feel intimidated and perhaps pressured into being 'totally' green by seemingly flawless peers or environmentalist representatives.

Morally and as a matter of pride people might feel they're doing the right thing by not committing to promising something they can't deliver. Maybe, however, rather than promoting a 'single vice' approach, it should be a 'nobody's perfect, but to try is better than to dismiss any attempt' attitude - ?

Hi Sophie ... thanks for the reply. I agree with exactly what you're saying in your last scentence... maybe we should therefore incorporate into the pledge scheme one vice - if say a minimum of 3 pledges are made? this way, the net result is hopefully a gain ... which is what we are working towards ...? Would be good to get to know all the members thoughts ....

I like the idea of allowing people to 'fess up to a green pledge vice (or two) - for all the reasons you and Sophie cite. Like the two of you, I'm not perfectly green either!

Hey Mark,
Its really refreshing to see such and honest post! Of course people are going to fly, and drive sports cars and so they should. We need to create more sustainable living, not just throw everything harmful away!
Point your friends who are finding it hard to change certain ways to this site. www.greenrewards.co.uk
I may be slightly bias as it is the company I work for, but for that very reason.
We like to think we have created a one stop shop to aid sustainable living that doesnt cost the earth, or your wallet.
Check it out
