Making environmental change happen

Hi folks
See attached pics. The first shows the external bin. Note the holes drilled in the sides to admit air which speeds the rotting process. This is also aided by Garotta accellerator. Purists may wish to use urine instead which IS cheaper!!

The second shows the compost bin with last years' compost rotting down. In October it was about 6" from the top and has now sunk to 16" a drop of 10" which is about right. I just need to add grasscuttings through the summer which may fill the bin up again depending on the rate of grwth this summer. If that happens I usually pile up the material on a flower bed in October and add it as the level in the bin drops through the winter.

The third shot shows the finished compost dug out of the bin last October ready to spraed on the garden in a week or two. It should last two years by which time I will have made another binful.

As you can see from the pics the compost bin is screened off from the rest of the garden by an internal fence so it is not visible from the house or garden.I have to say that this fairly modest system has worked well for around 25 years.
