Making environmental change happen

I agree composting is a great idea, and particularly interesting and challenging in an urban environment.

It seems in order to get started the very first step is to get a compost bin.

While browsing the net and via the recyclenow website I discovered that some councils offer compost bins at subsidise cost, and free delivery, all great but check out the discrepancies I found between retail cost, Wandsworth council, and Epsom Ewell council:

For a 220Ltr bin:

Retail: £27.00 (nowrecycle.co.uk)
Wandsworth Council: £13.95 (with free delivery, open to council residents only)
Epsom Ewell: £7.00 (£8.00 - £1.00 if ordered online, and free delivery, open to council residents only)

Any chance of pointing out to your friend's at the council Wandsworth is getting their backside kicked by Epsom Ewell, at least on the composting bin front? ;-)

PS While I intend to embark on a composting project, I have no idea about composting so intend to inform and be informed through this web forum, by letting you know how I am getting on, and hopefully hearing from my fellow composters about their composting adventures. to be continued......

The easy way to get worms into your composter is just to 'layer' the green material with a few shovel -fulls of garden soil collected after it has rained [which is supposed to bring them up to the suface]. A quick look through the earth may show a few worms. If there are no worms in your garden soil maybe it needs some compost ? Ha Ha.

There is no doubt that when I had the composter positioned ON the topsoil in the flower bed it always attracted more worms than it now does out of sight behind the fence which was originally an old alleyway full of stones.

On the subject of green material my neighbour who has a large lawn has bought himself a flymo mower which 'collects' the grass cuttings in an internal box yesterday gave me enough grass to fill the composter. This morning it was really hot inside showing how fast a mass of FRESH grass cuttings will start to rot down in one of these.
