i work in a small office near Farringdon in central London. it disappoints me that as a company we use so much paper which currently ends up in the bin...
What i would like to do is present to my boss an alternative and try and reduce the amount of paper used and also introduce a recycling policy for the company.
does anyone know of any recycling companies in central London and how it usually works? costs etc...
Hi Tom , Try these websites, they have a few links to recyling services and further info about office recycling, you could even try your local authority. Or type 'office recycling london' in to a search web page, list lots of services.
Hello Tom, well done for taking the initiative here. It will take a little while to evaluate all the different companies- if you hav e to go the private route, but if you are in the local authority of Islington which I know at least parts of Farringdon are, they do have a business recycling collection service, and if you haven't already contacted them, they would be a good first point of contact. There is a dedicated Recycling Team in the Environmental Services dept at Islington Council.
You contact them via the main contact number or email, which is initially answered by a general enquiries team and forwarded to the correct staff member. All recycling teams in local authorities are quite small I think Islington has about 4 staff members which work very hard to cover all the different issues around recycling in a densly packed inner london borough, but they are pretty good. I used to work with them a couple of years ago. One of my jobs was to check that collections of business waste had been collected by the recycling collection team who drive the collection lorries. One thing, they didn't used to collect shredded paper - it actually difficult to recycle at the mo for a number of reasons which I can explain if you like, but wont bother with that now. Of course, unshredded paper is collectable. try this page: http://www.islington.gov.uk/Environment/RubbishAndRecycling/recycli...
Importantly in terms of 'closing the loop' it is important to buy paper that is made up of recycled paper waste, prices have become a lot more competitive now and affordable for business. The company called London Remade was set up a few years ago now by the GLA under Ken Livingston, it coordinates recycling practice in London Boroughs which are all different (ridiculous I think but the all have diffent priorities and amounts of money...) and London Remade are a good source of private companies working in all categories of recycling and goods made from recycled materials. ie 'green procurement' this is the page on business support : http://www.londonremade.com/business-support
ps Have just noticed that the Islington council web page that I sent you says to contact Enterprise re business waste, Enterprise are the contractors that hold the waste and recycling contract with Islington. It should be fine, but incase of any problems ie if they forget to collect your waste more than once or twice don't hesitate to contact the councils Recycling team directly. It was this company that I was monitering!
