I am trying to organise food waste collection on my estate - Dumbarton Court in Brixton. I have talked to our contact at the council about this and she has said it's not possible. I find that hard to believe so am going to press on regardless. Does anybody have any experience organising collection of food waste on a council estate? Would be great to hear from you. Ta
A friend told me about Aardvark Recycling in Brixton. They collect food waste from Estates in Brixton. Perhaps they'd cover you? Google them, or phone 0845 337 3939.
The Pepys Estate in Lewisham was a good example, although I think they may have now run out of funding and had to close. I'm sure there's good lessons to be learnt though...
You can find details using the link on the South London Low Carbon project page and/or try contacting Sue (again on that page), who mentions it at the bottom of the Comments at bottom of the project page.
Also - try contacting the East London Community Recycling Partnership - http://www.elcrp-recycling.com/ for their experience.
Rachel - PLEASE PLEASE keep us up to date on how it goes, and share your learning - as you go - via Project Dirt (ideally by setting up a "project page" of your own...) this will be invaluable for our members!
Hi Rachel,
East London Community Recycling Partnership, http://www.elcrp-recycling.com/ . They provide food waste composting service in my office and are good. Let me know if you need contact details.

Hi Rachel,
no, I don't have a clue about collection on council estates but wonder whether you've got a bit of space to start a wormery. Maybe if you begin with a little thing you might find links to the bigger thing. I live in a little block of flats (12) in West Norwood, and started a wormery a few years ago, and it has gradually led to a bit of a network and a gardening project, and so on. Just a thought. Oh, I got the wormery from wiggly wigglers or greengardener.co.uk. Maybe the council can give you a subsidy. Who knows.
Good luck
Janet
Hello Rachel
have just read this, so dont know whether you have it sorted by now. Have you been in touch with Aardvark? The are a not for profit agency (charity?) that used to collect recycling on some Lambeth estates, and I know that they had a food waste collection scheme at one time.
Have you thought about collecting the food waste for small scale composting? It could be thought of as a local resource as opposed to waste. It could also be useful to get people more involved with recycling.
