Event Description

On Wednesday, December 2nd Pesticide Action Network UK will be staging its annual Rachel Carson Memorial Lecture for 2009 supported by the Co-operative Group. The lecture is an opportunity to celebrate the work of Rachel Carson through the promotion of public understanding of the dangers of pesticides and examination of issues affecting pesticide use. This year’s lecture will be entitled “Birds and Pesticides - Is the threat of a silent spring really behind us?” and given by Dr. Pierre Mineau, Senior Researcher and Head of the pesticide section for Canada’s Natural Wildlife Research Centre in Ottawa, and also professor at both Carleton University and the University of Saskatchewan.

Dr. Mineau began his career researching the impact of pesticides on wildlife over 30 years ago. After spending 12 years assessing new and existing pesticides in Canada he has now returned to full-time research. He has also been a consultant on pesticide impacts to several international agencies as well as governmental and non-governmental orgaisations in Canada and abroad. For this lecture Pierre Mineau will describe the highs and lows of the ongoing struggle to protect our feathered friends from the ravages of modern pest control.

The Rachel Carson Memorial Lecture will be held at 19:00 at the Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies on Thornhaugh Street in London. Tickets are £22 and can be obtained online at www.pan-uk.org or by phone at 020 7065 0905.
